RESOURCES: COCKROACHES American Cockroach
The American cockroach is also called a "waterbug", the "Bombay canary", and the "Palmettobug". Despite its name, the American cockroach is not native to North America but was most probably introduced via ships from Africa. It is present worldwide. Adults measure about 1 3/8" to 2 1/8" in length, brown except for a pale brown to yellowish band. Both sexes are fully winged, with the wings of the male extending beyond the tip of the abdomen. They are poor to moderately good fliers. The egg capsule is dark reddish to blackish brown, and about 3/8" long. The female deposits her egg capsule (ootheca) within a few hours or up to four days after it is formed. It is dropped or glued with a mouth secretion to a suitable surface, usually in a crack or crevice of high relative humidity near a food source. Roaches, depending on conditions, can live up to two years. Although American cockroaches are found in residences, they are much more common in larger commercial buildings, such as restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, food processing plants, hospitals; they usually infest food storage and preparation areas, basements, and steam tunnels. During summer months, they can be found outdoors in yards and alleys. They can enter structures by being brought in with items from yard sales, grocery stores, or occasional mass migration from other structures. Although they feed on many kinds of food, they show a particular fondness for fermenting food. Brown Cockroach
The brown cockroach is often mistaken for the American cockroach, which it closely resembles in appearance and habits. Although found mainly in the southern U.S. westward through Texas, it occurs as far north as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Columbus, Ohio. Adults measure about 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" in length, .dark reddish brown except for an irregular and sometimes faint yellowish brown to brown band or area. Both sexes are fully winged, with the wings of the male extending beyond the tip of the abdomen. They tend to glide rather than fly. The egg capsule is brownish when deposited, and then turns black, and about 1/2" long. The female deposits her egg capsule (ootheca) a day after it is formed. It is dropped or glued with a mouth secretion to a suitable surface near the ceiling, usually on plaster or concrete. Adults may live up to 20 months. The brown cockroach prefers hot and humid areas, and is usually found in the same areas one would expect to find American cockroaches. They can enter structures in many different ways. The brown cockroach normally feeds on plant materials. Termites | Fleas | Ticks | Yellowjackets, Wasps | Rodents Return to Bug Library We
